The studies in the Merchant Marine Academies consist of six (6) academic semesters and two (2) semesters of practical training on board a ship and offer contemporary knowledge and expertise of the highest level through the system of Alternate Education (Sandwich Courses), according to which the educational process takes turns, switching from the Academy onto the ship and vice versa.

The studies at the Merchant Marine Academy include academic courses, practical training in relevant workshops, as well as training through the use of simulators. In the Merchant Marine Academy of HYDRA there is a ‘‘SIMULATOR TRANSAS NTPRO 5000’’ including one (1) teaching station and six (6) workstations and a GMDSS type TGS 4100 simulator system.

There is also a Computer Laboratory equipped with both a sufficient number of personal computers and printers (which were all donated by the Greek Union of Shipowners) as well as with internet access.

-INTERNAL STUDIES: When internal studies are selected, accommodation is provided to the students.

-MIXED STUDIES: Students who choose mixed studies may reside outside the Merchant Marine Academy.

• The M.M.A. of HYDRA provides both internal and mixed studies; students are entitled to medical and hospital care provided by the Sailor’s Home to the insured, in accordance with current legislation. It is the Academy’s concern for the students to be provided with a personal health book and a dispensatory.

• Career - Perspective

The graduates of the Merchant Marine Academy acquire a degree of the Third Stage of Education and also a Third Class Officer’s degree, Deck Officer or Marine Engineer. They can also obtain a postgraduate degree in Greek or foreign schools and specialize in Shipping.

Once a secondary school graduate chooses a career in shipping, the perspective of finding a job and evolving professionally with significant financial rewards at an age that most young people who choose a different path have not completed their education yet, is fairly high.

The graduates of the Merchant Marine Academies can become Chief Officers and then move on to become Masters, after performing the essential sea service and acquiring the appropriate training in the Centre of Post Training for Deck Officers (KESEN).

A career in shipping is not confined to ships. Lots of other sectors are somehow connected to shipping, such as shipping companies, shipbuilding and repair yards, logistics, brokerage, classification societies, marine insurance companies, similar public and private organizations, etc. They offer alternative employment opportunities and substantial development perspectives, according to everyone's individual desires and ambitions. Having the knowledge and experience they acquired on board the ships they have served, the officers have all the required qualifications that will help them pursue a career ashore. Plenty of senior executives, who are currently employed in the aforementioned sectors, have previously worked as Merchant Marine Officers.
