The existing educational system in all Merchant Marine Academies of Greece, has been in effect since 1989 and it is the sandwich course.

Between the 2nd and 3rd semester and after the 6th semester, students travel on merchant ships      5-6 and 6-7 months, respectively, whereas apprentice officers apply in practice what they theoretically learned at the Academy. The duration of the studies is four years (including two educational trips on ships) and students, after graduating and further training, receive the Second Mate’s License.

The students of the Merchant Marine Academy of Hydra, apart from the above-mentioned compulsory training, have the extraordinary luck to receive free seminars during each educational year, both from experienced captains - members of the Hydra Captains Club, as well as from organizations – businesses of our Shipping indsutry.

The sole purpose of these seminars is the complete and specialized knowledge, so that they can cope perfectly with the increased requirements arising from the performance of the duties of a Second Mate’s License of the Merchant Navy.

These seminars are held in the state-of-the-art hall '' Athanasios & Gkikas KOULOURAS'' of the Merchant Marine Academy of Hydra, which was completely renovated at the expense of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping in 2018.
